FPS Sample Quick Start Guide

For those of you who haven’t downloaded and installed the FPS Sample yet, this is a great reference project and shows how far a small team (six main devs plus additional contractors) can push the game engine. Unity demo’ed this first-person multiplayer shooter at Unite 2018 in Los Angeles last year.

The project repository is currently available on GitHub for anyone who wants to check it out. Use it as a starter project or just borrow any assets/scripts that may apply to your own work (the generous terms of the companion license are here). It’s still under development, so check the repository for periodic updates.

Getting it setup is a little finicky so here’s a Quick Start guide to make the process a little easier.

Note that there are some caveats for installing it:

  • Currently this is Windows-only (sorry Mac users, you may need to wait a while); you can build for Windows64 and Playstation 4, but for the moment, you’ll need a Windows machine.
  • You MUST have Git and Git LFS (large file storage) installed on your machine; if you are using SourceTree for version control, these come with the application. Otherwise, you may need to download and install those separately.
  • Have several hours to spare before attempting this; it’s a large, large project (the original repo is 18 GB but it expands to 50 GB).
  • DON’T try to use the Download button on the GitHub repository; you will need to use the URL to clone to the repository or it won’t work.
  • Save yourself some headache and use the same Unity version used to create the repo; you may need to grab that directly from the Unity Beta Archive if it’s not available as an officially in the Unity Hub.
  • Check out the official Forum for support or questions

While the installation is bit frustrating at times, when you get it working, you’re rewarded with a free multiplayer arena shooter to share with your friends.

This is a fun showcase of what Unity can do, and there definitely will be some more posts about this project in the future!
