Measured Material Library

Unity recently announced the Measured Materials Library. This is a set of 300 materials available for free, downloadable as a package from the Asset Store.

Included are some detailed examples of:

  • fabric/suede
  • plastic
  • leather
  • wood
  • metal and chrome
  • car paint

Many of these are complex with multiple layers of textures. Work with them directly in your projects or else use them as a starting point for completely new materials.

ShaderGraph has been used to craft the shaders, so they are easy to tweak to your liking (make sure you check out our videos on ShaderGraph here).

Note that there are some caveats with this library:

  • The entire library is 1.5 Gigabytes. You may want to import the material library into an empty project. Then just export any measured materials as needed.
  • The materials only work with the High-Definition Render Pipeline. If you use a different Pipeline, the materials will show up with the broken magenta error color.
  • You may need to upgrade your High-Definition Render Pipeline package to version 4.9 at minimum.
  • Make sure the Diffusion Profile Settings are populated in the HDRP Pipeline asset.
  • You will need to re-import the Shader Graph assets to fix any compile errors with the shaders.
  • Some errors do occur with certain graphics cards and drivers. This is an early version of the asset, and remember that the High-Definition Render Pipeline is still in Preview.
